Chhath Puja 2025 — Celebrating the Sun Across the World
Chhath Puja is a deeply spiritual and eco-friendly Hindu festival, dedicated to Surya Dev (Sun God) and Chhathi Maiya (Goddess of Dawn). It is celebrated mainly in Bihar, Jharkhand, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, and Nepal, but the diaspora worldwide also observes it with devotion.
What makes Chhath special is the direct worship of the rising and setting sun — without idols — combined with rigorous fasting, purity, and ritual discipline.
In 2025, the festival spans four days (Nahay Khay, Kharna, Sandhya Arghya, Usha Arghya).
Day | Ritual | Date (2025, India reference) | Key Moments* |
Day 1 – Nahay Khay | Purification & first meal | 25 October 2025 | Holy bath and sattvik food |
Day 2 – Kharna / Lohanda | Fasting & evening offering | 26 October 2025 | Break fast with kheer, fruits |
Day 3 – Sandhya Arghya | Evening offering to setting sun | 27 October 2025 | Offer arghya at sunset |
Day 4 – Usha Arghya | Morning offering & fast break | 28 October 2025 | Pre-sunrise arghya, then break fast |
The third day’s evening arghya (water-offering to sun) and fourth-day morning arghya are the main rituals. The devotees fast, endure austerities, and offer prayers in or near water bodies.
Below we present approximate “Sandhya Arghya” and “Usha Arghya” windows for various countries. Use these as guidance, and adjust for your city’s sunrise/sunset & lunar day transitions.

Ritual Flow & Observance Tips Abroad
To help devotees abroad observe Chhath properly, here is a suggested flow and tips:
Preparations
-
Choose a clean, serene spot (rooftop, terrace, large tub, balcony, or near a pond if available).
-
Arrange a shallow tray or container (soop), earthen lamps, fruits, sugarcane, thekua, raw milk, turmeric, and water in vessels.
-
Clean the area thoroughly and ensure no distractions.
Day 1 & Day 2 (Nahay Khay & Kharna)
-
On Day 1, take a ritual bath and consume a sattvic meal.
-
On Day 2, observe fast (often waterless) until sunset; after the evening arghya break fast with prasad (kheer, fruits).
Day 3 – Sandhya Arghya (Evening Offering)
-
Reach your “ghat” spot 30–45 minutes before local sunset.
-
Stand in water (if safe and feasible) or near waterline, offer water, prasad in soop, light lamps, chant mantras or bhajans.
-
Stay until after sunset; some devotees keep vigil through the night.
Overnight vigil
-
Devotees often remain awake, reciting prayers, staying in contemplative mood.
Day 4 – Usha Arghya (Morning Offering)
-
Before local sunrise, return to the spot.
-
Offer final arghya to the rising sun, water, prasad.
-
After the offering, break the fast (parana). Share prasad with community.
Adjustments & Precautions
-
If you can’t find open water, use a large tub or container to mimic a “riverbank.”
-
If horizon is obstructed (buildings, hills), shift offering slightly earlier when the sun is visible.
-
Be mindful of safety (slippery surfaces, open water, lighting at night).
-
Always verify local sunrise/sunset, local time differences, and moon / tithi boundaries.
Significance & Spirit of Chhath Abroad
For those living away from home, observing Chhath Puja connects one deeply to tradition, heritage, and spiritual discipline. It is a reaffirmation of gratitude to nature, acceptance of spiritual austerity, and a moment of unity with the celestial cycle, even when far from native shores.
Even in foreign lands, the devotion remains — the rising sun, the golden rays, the pure offerings — all transcend distance.
